Cole M. RobbinsLinda's Response via Email:
My experience at the time of the Y's closure was that a new and/or interim Y was being planned to be built. It turned out to not be economically possible and members were informed that the Central Y Gym and other services would be closed. Members were allowed to switch their memberships to the various other Ys in the Bay Area. The Embarcadero Y, which had been serving the financial district area for a long time was the closest Y to the Central Y. Many Central Y members then reluctantly pulled up roots and switched to the Embarcadero Y. As you do point out so well, the switch was much more than a simple change in location.
